Comparison is the Thief of Joy – July 2017

Comparison is the Thief of Joy

This quote from Keith Adams struck a chord with me.  With the advent of social media such as Facebook, where everybody is deliriously happy, and LinkedIn, where everyone is extraordinarily successful; comparison with fabricated images is a recipe for unhappiness.  It is far wiser to gain clarity on one’s own values and then live to these goals and standards.  While we can be inspired by, and learn from other people, we cannot be them – they are already taken.  We need to be circumspect about who we want to emulate.  Not only do most of us have a public face which diminishes our imperfections, some people, seemingly attractive, have toxic values.  Yet we need to be tolerant and even respectful of other people’s choices.

In the corporate setting, we can encourage team members to work to their strengths and personal values.  One size does not fit all.  For example, if promotion is the key indicator of success, the whole organisation is condemned to dissatisfaction because there is only one CEO – and is s/he happy?

Top 25 Australian Companies Sought by LinkedIn Applicants

It is informative to read why these large companies (With over 500 employees) are sought by people seeking a career move.  Interestingly, this list does not necessarily correlate with organisations with the highest employee engagement scores.  One can for example gain much more satisfaction from working in a community service organisation such as World Vision, yet know that your professional development may be best boosted in an organisation such as PWC.  Smaller companies, especially young growing ones, are often also satisfying and developmental places to work because employees are close to the business.  The top 10 large employers sought were: Click for the full article

Polson & Co – 28 Years Providing Consulting Resources to Clients
Some down time as a result of a lingering back injury from a car accident has given me some time to reflect on our 28th anniversary.  Consultant brokering is really is a paid hobby for me.  I enjoy linking people with opportunities.  I also enjoy hearing people’s life stories in the recruitment process.

I have been fortunate to have the support of great team members some of whom love meeting prospects/clients and some who take pride in ensuring the administration supports the service.  I feel a sense of pride from some of the changes in organisations that we have had a background role in supporting.  I did a calculation on how much money we have paid to consultants over the years and was pleasantly surprised by how much we have paid consultants over the years.

The core business purpose, helping people develop the skills and confidence to gain personal satisfaction and to make a meaningful contribution to organisations, is a constructive one.  People in the HR and HRD field make the world a better place.
