Skills in Demand & Economic Benefit – Deloitte Report
I am indebted to Glen Campbell who alerted me to the Deloitte Report on the premium skills required by the workforce, the industries where there are shortages and most importantly, some very useful cost benefit statistics.  I strongly recommend you read the full report, or at least the Deloitte summary - https://www.deakinco.com/premium-skills

Fire and Pestilence
Although, if there is a plague of locusts to accompany the record high temperatures, catastrophic firestorms, day becoming night, hail, and now the coronavirus, one could wonder if Israel Folau was right……  On the other hand, we could wonder whether pumping huge amounts of carbon into the air without reabsorbing it would be judged as the smart thing to do by our grandchildren.

Speaking of being smart and ethical, it is interesting to see that many organisations have accepted the human impact on climate change and are taking action to reduce their carbon footprint before public opinion and then superannuation funds, demands it of them.  They are also taking strategic action.
e.g. Brown Brothers have started vineyards in Tasmania so that they will still have a business when the climate makes it harder to grow some varieties on the mainland.

I raise the issue of climate change because Human Resource professionals have a responsibility to reduce business practices which damage the environment and the long-term interests of their organisations.

I am reminded from my youth in South Africa where most white people in HR stood on the sidelines in relation to Apartheid even though they knew it was wrong and would have a huge economic cost later.  On the other hand, some saw that both justice and economic benefit would be served if they developed less restrictive work practices.

Instructional Designers Making a Difference in Fire Disaster
While the fires have been a catastrophe, we noted that the Victorian Country Fire Authority and State Emergency Service were highly professional, effective and calm in their response.  This was not an accident.  Victoria did implement a number of changes following the Black Saturday Fires.  This included streamlining communication between services as well as developing coordinated training programs for the services.  We are proud to have provided some of the instructional designers that developed these programs which made a significant contribution in managing the fires and their consequences.
